Kate, a single woman in her late thirties is burdened by a
troublesome past. She hopes for redemption by having a baby, but
when her plans fall through, she is forced to find an alternative
she could not envisage.
'The Mother' is one of the most primordial and deeply held
symbols of human culture. Whether it is in the guise of the Virgin
Mary, Gaea 'The Mother Goddess' or the wicked stepmothers that
populate children's fairy tales, the symbol of the mother is a
profound human expression , rooted in our earliest fantasies.
In this film, the symbol is given a modern reworking through the
story of Kate, a single and lonely woman in her late thirties, who
is desperately trying to change the course of her troublesome life.
Living in a nondescript, industrial port city in the South of
England, Kate saves the money she receives from her cleaning job in
order to pay for a planned artificial insemination. When the doctor
discovers Kate's past, he refuses to allow her the treatment.
Desperate, Kate is forced to seek other alternatives.
Taking narrative risks and playing with our understanding of
characterisation, this film is a reworking of what it means to be a
mother in our ambiguous, modern times.
